Enrollment Policy

The 2020 Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute offers unique courses in Ukrainian studies taught by Harvard and visiting faculty. These courses are intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates who are concentrating in Ukrainian studies or who wish to broaden their educational experience. Students intending to participate in the HUSI program are asked to submit a HUSI enrollment form and cover letter introducing themselves. Students must also complete the Harvard Summer School registration process and enroll in the classes they intend to take as part of HUSI.

Tuition for HUSI is commensurate with tuition rates charged for all other Harvard Summer School courses. Tuition for 2020 and the cost of on-campus room and board are posted on the Harvard Summer School website. 

Applicants may register for 8 or 4 credits to participate in the program. Applicants seeking the I-20 certificate for the student F-1 US visa must register for 8 credits. 
Coronavirus update: Harvard Summer School will no longer issue I-20 certificates for on-campus study this year. All I-20 certificates that have already been issued will be canceled as required by U.S. federal immigration regulations. Courses

We are pleased to offer three courses this year through the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute:

• Ukrainian for Reading Knowledge - 8 credits
• Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Ukrainian Literature: Rethinking the Canon - 4 credits
• Tradition and Modernity in Ukraine: 19th and 20th Centuries - 4 credits

Applicants wishing to register for a total of 8 credits must enroll in at least one HUSI 4 credit course to be considered part of the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute and may choose an additional 4 credit course from those offered by the general program of the Harvard Summer School. Applicants who decide to register for a non-HUSI course need to register for that course separately online through the Harvard Summer School. Please note that scholarships are offered only to students who plan to take 8 credits in HUSI courses.

Fees and Scholarships

Update 4/15: Additional funding for students taking the Ukrainian Language course during HUSI 2020 is available. Applications for scholarships for the language course may be submitted until May 1 and will be considered on a rolling basis. Please submit the materials listed below to Megan Duncan Smith, Programs Coordinator, duncansmith@fas.harvard.edu. 

HURI offers a limited number of full and partial scholarships to students with academic promise who express a need for financial assistance. 

Send the following materials to Megan Duncan Smith, duncansmith@fas.harvard.edu  byMarch 20, 2020 March 30, 2020. (May 1 for students taking the language course.)

• HUSI enrollment form
• Essay (including statement of need)
• College transcript (a copy issued to the student is acceptable)
• Recommendation from a college instructor (or employer if you are out of school)
• For non-native English-speakers: most recent TOEFL scores, IELTS scores, or PTE academic score report as detailed on the application (students may also submit a qualifying transcript as described on the English Proficiency Requirement section of the Harvard Summer School website)

Eligible students requesting a scholarship from HURI who intend to take Ukrainian for Reading Knowledge should also apply for summer FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies). 

Outside Funding Opportunities

FLAS: Ukrainian for Reading Knowledge is a FLAS-eligible language course. Harvard and non-Harvard graduate and undergraduate students may thus apply for FLAS funding through Harvard's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and through their home institution, provided it participates in the US Department of Education sponsored program. FLAS applicants must also be either US citizens or permanent residents to be eligible. For more information regarding FLAS funding and application, please contact Donna Griesenbeck.

Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships (Undergraduate and Graduate)

FLAS applicants can also apply separately for HURI’s scholarships.

Additional sources: US and international students are encouraged to inquire at centers for international experience or student assistance at their home institutions. Canadian students may be able to receive help from the Ontario Student Assistance Program. It offers a mix of grants and loans for students taking classes at approved institutions.

Deadlines

All students (US and international) seeking a scholarship from HURI must submit the HUSI enrollment form and supporting material by March 20, 2020 March 30, 2020 (May 1 for language students).

All students (US and international) must meet registration, payment, and other deadlines listed on the Summer School website (many deadlines are May 18).

• While students may register for courses independently, students wishing to be part of the HUSI program should also submit a HUSI enrollment form and relevant supporting material.

Summer School Registration

Upon notification of financial aid offer and/or enrollment in the 2020 Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute, all students must complete the registration process with Harvard Summer School.

Be aware of the additional registration requirements for Harvard Summer School (if applicable):

• International students requesting an I-20 certificate for the F-1 student visa from Harvard Summer School: Meet all I-20 requirements. Check the Harvard Summer School website for deadlines and information.
• Request Summer School housing in your Online Services account.
• Make full payment of tuition, housing (if applicable), and all other fees. Credit card payments are accepted through Online Services. Alternative payment options are available.
• If you will live in Summer School housing or are an international student attending Summer School while on a visa of any kind (including students who use the visa waiver program or similar entry programs established between the United States and foreign countries), you must comply with Massachusetts and Harvard University regulations requiring proof of immunization against certain communicable diseases. Submit proof of immunization.
