"Functional and Stylistic Distribution of Church Slavonic, Russian and Ukrainian in Language of H.S. Skovoroda: A Case Study of the Linguistic Situation in 18th Century Slobozanscyna"

Abstract:

Bartolini plans to make a detailed study of H.S. Skovoroda’s language. She will examine the stylistic and functional distribution of its three different components: Church Slavonic, Russian, and Ukrainian. Particular focus will be placed on the philosopher's language within the linguistic context of the East Slavic territories under the tsarist empire between 1760 and 1780. Bartolini will take into account two major phenomena: the rise of so-called "Slaveno-Russian"; and the interaction of old Ukrainian Baroque and pre-Baroque norms with the evolving new Russian literary language in Sloboda's Ukraine.
